The livestock export industry has raised more than $40,000 at its annual gala dinner charity auction, to be shared between the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Queensland and the Cowboys Community Foundation.
The event was the culmination of LIVEXchange 2019, the industry’s national conference, which was held in Townsville from 30-31 October.
The conference was hosted by LiveCorp and the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Association (ALEC), this year in conjunction with the Queensland Livestock Exporters’ Association (QLEA).
QLEA President Greg Pankhurst said exporters always dig deep for the charity auction.
“The export industry relies on rural and regional Australia, and the auction is a way we can give back to those communities, by supporting organisations that provide essential services to them,” Mr Pankhurst said.
This year’s conference theme was ‘welfare beyond borders’, and it was attended by more than 350 delegates from across the international supply chain.
Many of the speakers had first-hand experience of living and working in the industry’s markets around the world, providing insights into the improvements it has brought to animal welfare, as well as the many ways it has a positive impact on the welfare of communities.
Highlights of the conference included keynote speakers Professor David Hughes from the Imperial College, London, and Jason Clarke from Minds at Work, who had delegates both entertained and challenged to think about the forces shaping the industry and how to meet them.
Federal Minister for Agriculture Senator Bridget McKenzie took the opportunity to launch The Cattle Collective at LIVEXchange, while Queensland Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner MP also took the opportunity to speak of his support for the industry.
